Because Viagra works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), ED can occur. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday it's approving a generic version of a drug that was used to treat erectile dysfunction, the drug’s generic name being Viagra.
The approval follows the approval by the U. Food and Drug Administration for a generic version of the drug Cialis, a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
“The approval of this drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is highly significant in the treatment of men with erectile dysfunction,” the agency said in a statement. “This approval will allow patients and doctors to safely prescribe the medication for a variety of conditions, including ED.”
Viagra, the branded drug approved for use in the U. S., has been on the market since at least May 2012. A generic version of the drug, sold under the brand name Cialis, is also on the market. It was introduced in the United States by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc.
The drug’s approval was part of an effort by U. regulators to lower the cost of Viagra to as little as $5,000 a year. The drug also was approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
“This is an important step in addressing the rising cost of erectile dysfunction treatments and will enable individuals to make the most of this affordable medicine,” said Janet Woodcock, the Whitehouse Station, N. J.-headquartered reproductive health arm of the Whitehouse Station, N. J.-based regulatory agency. “We are proud to partner with Pfizer Inc. and the U. Department of Justice to take this step.”
Viagra, known generically as sildenafil, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It’s approved by the FDA in both adults and children ages 2 to 17 that was initially used for pulmonary arterial hypertension and is now used to treat erectile dysfunction.
According to the FDA, the drug is the most cost-effective option for treating erectile dysfunction at this stage.
“This is a major step in addressing the rising cost of erectile dysfunction treatments and will enable patients and doctors to safely prescribe the medication,” Woodcock added.
“This approval will allow patients and doctors to safely prescribe the medication for a variety of conditions, including ED,” she added.
In addition to the approval, the drug is being manufactured by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. The company is seeking FDA approval to market the drug as a generic version of Cialis.
The company will have to submit additional data for the company to determine the relative efficacy of each drug and ensure the company receives FDA approval to market the generic version. The drug is expected to have a market share of approximately 10% from its patent-protected version.
Cialis is already on the market, having been approved by the FDA in May. The drug will be sold under the brand name Viagra in the U. and in a generic version. The generic version is also available as Cialis.

This release is subject to approval by the U. Food and Drug Administration. This release may be updated to reflect the latest FDA guidance regarding the treatment of ED.No. People do it, but getting it through Customs without it being confiscated depends on which agent interviews you upon arrival back in the US.
The Food and Drug Administration policy on theimportation of prescription drugspurchased abroad is fairly clear.
Under most circumstances, federal guidelines prohibit the importation of such drugs for personal use, largely because medications sold in another country have not been approved by the FDA for use in this country.
That said, your personal experience in returning to the United States with or another prescription drug you’ve purchased abroad depends to a very large extent on the Customs agent who checks your baggage upon your return.
If you’ve been honest in filling out your Customs declaration and have listed the foreign-bought medications, Customs legally could seize the drugs. However, the tendency is to look the other way if the drug in question is not a controlled substance and if the amount purchased doesn’t exceed a 90-day supply.
do allow thepersonal importation of prescription drugs that treat serious medical conditionsand that aren’t available in the United States.
However, there are a few other conditions that govern the policy on such drugs.
The FDA’s guidelines apply toprescription medications that are brought in from any country outside the United States, including Canada.
While most over-the-counter medications can be imported in amounts consistent with personal use, this policy does not extend to products that are OTC in other countries but available only by prescription in the United States.
The bottom line: Be aware that you’re running arisk of confiscation when you return to the United States with prescription drugsbought abroad.
